Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you so much for writing a story for me! I've tried to put plenty of information for each fandom, but if you would like to write something completely different please feel free! I am also happy for you to include as many or as few of the nominated characters as you wish. If you're not sure about anything, or want to do a crossover with another fandom and need to check if I know it, just ask my partner [personal profile] st_aurafina.

Things I enjoy: stories about female characters, plot, character interaction, gen fic or any of femslash/het/slash, exploring a canon world. I also like OCs as a way to expand the canon universe, so if that's a direction you want to go, that would be great too. AUs are fine – both in the sense of a deviation from canon and a completely different world – as long as they're not mundane AUs. Coffee shop no, superpowered coffee shop yes.

Things I don't enjoy: non-con or rape, non-canon character deaths (canon deaths are fair game), mentor/student, adult/teen or adult/child sexual interaction, zombies, apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic AUs, mundane AUs.

I had a busy and comics-filled Yuletide this year! Four fics, all Marvel comics. I tried to get a pinch hit but they just went so fast - and I couldn't write in the last 48 hours before the reveals due to work - that I gave up and treated instead. Honestly, it was a lot of fun and probably less stressful overall. For the first time ever, I matched my assigned recipient on all fandoms! This was at first exciting and then surprisingly paralysing, and I started two fics before jumping into this one and thoroughly enjoying it.

For Yuletide this year I both wrote and received fic in the awesome Queen's Thief fandom. It's a very twisty, plotty series of books, but fortunately my recipient asked for a missing scene in the books so I didn't have to try to plot to Megan Whalen Turner's standards!

The fic I received managed to include one of my favourite things in fic without me even mentioning it (good footnotes) so that alone would have been thrilling, but it's a future fic, a historian looking back on the rule of the two Queens I requested. It was wonderful seeing what little details about the Queens' lives made it through to posterity, and the author even included excerpts of letters and histories and highly debated writings by the one character in the books who does actually write things down. And, of course, since the series had a potential future event as a major motivator for certain characters, it was fascinating to see how that worked out in both the person and writing of the historian.

The Two Queens (1782 words) by plalligator
Chapters: 3/3
Fandom: The Queen's Thief - Megan Whalen Turner
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Eddis/Sophos (Queen's Thief), Attolia/Eugenides (Queen's Thief)
Characters: Eddis (Queen's Thief), Attolia (Queen's Thief)
Additional Tags: Meta, Original Character(s)
Summary:

A Treatise on the Partnership Between Eddis Thēlykό and Attolia Έndoxē During the Golden Age (Excerpts from the Introduction and Chapters 1 and 2)

compiled by the scholar Sophia in the year 1022

The fic I wrote was a lot of fun - Eugenides is a highly unreliable narrator, and when I got to the end of the first section which features an improbable feat of thieving, I realised that he was telling the story, so then I had to think about who was his audience, and that set up the rest of the fic for me. The title is from this poem by Rumi which I think is highly appropriate for the characters in question.

Dear Yuletide Writer,

Thank you so much for writing a story for me! I've tried to put various ideas in this letter, but if you'd rather go off on a different tangent, please feel free.

Things I enjoy: stories about female characters, plot, character interaction, gen fic or any of femslash/het/slash, exploring a canon world. I also like OCs as a way to expand the canon universe, so if that's a direction you want to go, that would be great too.

Things I don't enjoy: non-con or rape, non-canon character deaths (canon deaths are totally fine), adult/teen or adult/child sexual interaction, zombies, apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic fics.

Adaptation - Malinda Lo, Baker Street (Comic), Captain Britain and MI:13, Kuragehime|Princess Jellyfish, Orphan Black, Problems - Salmonella Dub (music video) )

Thank you again, and I hope you have a great Yuletide.

Hello, lovely author! Thank you for writing a fic for me! I've written a fair bit here, but it's all guidelines - if there's a story you really want to tell that doesn't fit the details in this letter, I trust you to write it in a way that's right for the story. If you've signed up for one of my other fandoms but are having doubts, the total canon for Problems is less than 4 minutes long and can be found online here. In every fandom, I've chosen my very favourite characters as a starting point, but please don't feel obliged to write all (or indeed any) of them if you have a different idea.

Things I like in fic: all characters having agency and purpose: everyone should be a character in their own right. I love plotty genfic, but also fic about relationships (any gender/s) that anchor or propel the plot. Fic that looks at the underpinnings of the fictional universe, including fic about OCs or very minor characters in that universe, is always a favourite of mine. I like historical and local detail, but I'm not going to cry if something is changed in service of the story!

Things I don't like in fic: sexy rape, sexy or "necessary" torture, incest, adult/child or teacher/student sexual relationships (even when the student is an adult). Plots that would be easily resolved if two people just talked to each other for five minutes are not my favourites. BDSM is not my thing at all, and I don't like it when characters are embarrassed or humiliated. I also have a phobia of zombies and of apocalyptic fic (rebuilding far, far in the future is okay), so please don't write me either of those.

Guys! Guys! Someone wrote me a Modest Medusa fic!

Fandom: Modest Medusa
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Jake (Modest Medusa), Marah (Modest Medusa), Charles (Modest Medusa), Medusa (Modest Medusa)
Summary:

Things have just been so weird since Medusa moved in.

It's a dear little fic, adorable and funny and full of cats and internet and Simpsons jokes! And time travel, or possibly alternate universes, and transfigurations and amazing plans!

Two of my fandoms aren't getting any offers, and they're both short canons, so I thought I'd post about them here!

The first is Modest Medusa, a webcomic about a little girl Medusa, who goes through a portal in her own fantasy-style world and ends up popping out of the toilet of Jake, a web cartoonist. She lives in Jake's toilet, makes friends with his geeky niece Marah, learns to eat junk food and play DS and X-Box, and generally enjoys her life. There are, of course, complications, not the least of them being a chainsaw unicorn. It's generally charming and geeky, three of the four major characters are female, but it does occasionally have quite graphic cartoon violence.

Below the cut, two comics strips )

The other fandom is "Problems", a music video from New Zealand reggae trip hop band Salmonella Dub. It's a beautifully animated cartoon video with a peculiar and dream-like story with seasonal moustaches and marimbas made of skulls. The song itself is one of my favourites, and I wrote my entire Kaleidoscope story listening to it. The Salmonella Dub official site is not available in Australia for some reason, but it's also on Vimeo. Enjoy!

There's lots of tiny fandoms popping up for Yuletide this year, which is always my favourite part, so here's two more!

FANDOMS

Undercovers
What I love about this show is that I can relax while I watch it: all the characters are competent, no-one is put down for their race or gender or sexuality, the plots are fun without being humiliating or cruel. Sam and Steven are utterly believable as a couple who – while they may not have told each other everything – still have a tremendous trust, love and respect for each other. I would adore any fic that captured this feeling.

Gen fic about a mission, about catering, Sam's college days or anything else would be lovely, but if you prefer to write Sam or Steven in a different pairing (het, slash or femslash), that's all good with me, too. I don't want to see Sam or Steven cheating or conveniently written out, but pre-relationship hijinks or an open or poly relationship based on the trust they already have would be completely fine. I don't want to see Sam/Lizzie, though, thank you.

Alternatively, there have been things in the show that are happily glossed over – the Blooms or Leo killing people, the CIA intervening in the politics or laws of other countries, extraordinary rendition and the CIA working with other agencies. If you wanted to explore the hidden underbelly of Undercovers – while maintaining Sam and Steven's trust in each other, if nothing else – that could be really fascinating too.

Gotham Central
Regular people in a superpowered world is always enticing to me, and the forced interaction between the cops and the Gotham underworld was particularly tough and well written here. Unlike most people, they can't retreat from this battle, and they struggle on against heroic odds.

My personal favourites are Maggie Sawyer, Renee Montoya and Crispus Allen, if you're looking for a place to start, but it's really the strange, brightly coloured noir that I like; the daily grind of unacceptable compromises that must be made, and working at the edges of the law just to keep the law upheld. Guest appearances from any of the Gotham heroes or villains would be very welcome, but I would love the focus to be on the GCPD or any individual member, and the way they get by.

Captain Britain and MI:13
So ridiculous, so seriously heroic. My favourite characters are Faiza (Excalibur), Jacqueline (Spitfire) and Meggan (did Gloriana stick?) but I love the whole damn lot of them. Even Captain Midlands. I would love a fic about their adventures, or their downtime, or sniping at each other when they're meant to be working. I'd love to see them fight an invasion, or play cricket, or protect visiting dignitaries from magical terrorists, or battle a former friend or teammate.

While this all sounds very gen – and I love genfic – I would be just as happy to see something like how Spitfire and Blade manage a vampire/vampire hunter relationship or Faiza telling Dane "don't mention the war Crusades!" every time he meets her parents. Splitting up or ignoring canon relationships is totally fine. A crossover with other Marvel characters would be fun, too – I'm a particular fan of the assorted X-Men teams, but I have a pretty broad (and entirely flexible!) knowledge of Marvel canon if you want someone else to pop over for a visit. AUs would also be fun, but only if they're not apocalyptic.

Scott Pilgrim (comic)
Roxy Richter! Kim Pine! Ramona Flowers! Envy Adams! Knives Chau, now 18 years old! What's even going on with them? I would love a story about any of these women and what goes on in their crazy, creative lives.

Roxy has a fine art exhibition – why is she in the League of Evil Exes and chasing down Scott? Kim and Ramona should go to college and get drunk together – oh and wait, Knives is going to college! Why did Kim start playing the drum anyway, and how's that rivalry with The Boys! And Crash! and their girl drummer going? Does anyone get to call Envy "Nat" these days, and how did Gideon change her career?
As you can probably tell, I would love femslash or gen for this request. If you're a hardcore slash or het writer, though, go for it, as long as at least one of the women from the comic (or hey, an always!cismale or transman version of them!) is front and centre in the fic.

Not everyone agrees, I know, but I really, really enjoyed Yuletide this year. [livejournal.com profile] fireriven wrote me a wonderful Strictly Ballroom fic, full of the wild, hot pink, glittery DRAMA of the movie - and she's not even Australian. She even managed to include femslash, no less, as a way to relate back to the very first scene of the movie. If you're a fan of Baz Luhrmann, ballroom dancing or Great Personal Revelations *while* ballroom dancing, New Steps is right here. Honestly, it was strangely touching to read an Australian fandom - I've never written one, or even an Aussie OC. I really should do that.

Meanwhile, my own Yuletide fic was for Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. I started with the idea of people who don't fit in - in this case, Tasma is a tall, solid girl who has a palaeontologist father and a lot of education - and thinking about what their daemons might be. This took me to Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace (a colleague of Darwin's who independently came to a very similar theory of evolution, before Darwin did!) remembered mostly for the Wallace Line. The London (and other places) of this world is a strong theocracy, so that's obviously going to work in a different way to Darwin's discoveries in our world; and that kind of science can have a big social and personal impact.

Also, it's fascinating to write a world where everyone's souls are on the outside.

Huge thanks go to [personal profile] newredshoes for betaing this 10,000 word dinosaur-sized fic, as I have a terrible tendency to want to show all the exciting things that I've researched while leaving gaps in the actual plot and motivations, and [personal profile] newredshoes's comments really shaped this into a coherent story. (Also thanks to [personal profile] st_aurafina for squeeing about dinosaurs with me, and being kind to me when I had to re-read the end of the third book in the trilogy, *sob*!)

Title: Dinosaurs in the Architecture (also on AO3)

My mysterious and yet delightful Yuletide author has written me the most sparkly, spangled, spunky fic in existence - New Steps in the tiny (and yet broadly accented and brightly coloured) fandom of Strictly Ballroom!

I asked for the women of Strictly Ballroom after the events of the movie, and this delivers far more than I could have hoped - Fran and Shirley in their new lives, Liz claiming her place as the big-haired, flat-stomached, heavily made-up heroine of the dance floor and, of all people, Tina Sparkle finding that there's more to life than under-the-table deals and drunken Ken - sometimes you need to go right back to the basics to find something new and wonderful.

[personal profile] st_aurafina can testify that I am dancing around in my seat. I am so thrilled! The writer apologised for any mistakes writing for an Aussie in one of the few Aussie fandoms - but it's just so much in the voice of the characters, and so very Strine. Zie needn't have worried. If you are at all familiar with this movie (or Baz Luhrmann in general) run! Overload the archive for this one! It's magical!

My primary Yuletide fandom was Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield's wonderful online comic FreakAngels which I highly recommend to anyone who likes questions of morality and power, detailed post-apocalyptic rebuilding, and a little touch of steampunk. And you can read it for free!

I was a bit shocked to see how many people offered the fandom and how few commented on the two fics in this fandom, but I enjoyed writing this very much, and the comments I did get (thanks to the fics with just one comment post) were lovely. It is a fandom with no fanfic apart from the Yuletide fics, though, so it's good to be one of the first!

For [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, I wrote two stories, one of them written with many tears of despair, one of them a Yuletide Treat written in four hours. Guess which one received the most feedback? I can't blame the readers, though: the V for Vendetta fic is the result of tragedy (complete with quotations), despite its themes of hope and rebuilding. In fact, I find the fandom so depressing, though fascinating, that I didn't even read last year's excellent Yuletide V for Vendetta fic until I was making preparations to write my own story. The Excalibur fic is an old-school Claremont-style romp. With hugging. I was certainly looking for uplifting, fun reading during the stressful Christmas period, and it seems I was not alone! So, read the first fic if you're feeling strong of heart, and the second if you're in need of a hug!

Anything other than porn with interchangeable characters is good with me, and I really wouldn't expect that from Yuletide. Most of all, you're writing me a fic in one of these fandoms, so my squee is all ready to be unleashed upon your words.

This year, I wrote in two fandoms for the first time: Malory Towers and Young Avengers.
Malory Towers broke my brain for a while, as I tried to work out an angle for the story, but once I'd decided to write gen/femslash (read as you please, just like the actual books), everything flowed easily. [livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina should be awarded some kind of medal for her calming influence during the Time of Panic. Also, there's a Chalet School cameo, as requested. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kannaophelia, canon-savvy beta reader extraordinaire!

Young Avengers was a pinch hit, as I felt comfortable enough with the universe and characters to leap into it, even though I had to re-read parts of Civil War, and Mark Millar made me cross. I'm posting the two fics in my LJ because I'm trying to keep everything in one place.
