lilacsigil: Jean Grey, Marvel Comics, "On Fire" (phoenix fire)
Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007 11:40 am
This was my assigned story for [livejournal.com profile] xmmficathon. The concept of the Sylvia Plath poem and Phoenix had been tied together in my head since I first read the poem and the comic around the same time, back in high school, 1992, so it was quite a relief to finally sort it all out in a story. Even if it did make me cry hysterically.

Title: Conversations with Lady Lazarus
Recipient: Kira ([livejournal.com profile] crimson_keys)
Rating: PG for character death (in canon)
Characters: Charles, Jean, Erik, Scott, Ororo
Character/pairing request: Charles
Specific request: knowing he was about to die and
failing in his attempt to save Jean (during the events
of the third movie)

Quotations are from Lady Lazarus by Sylvia Plath

This was a pinch hit, in a pairing I'd never really thought about before, let alone written. Even so, once I had thought about what Rogue might do with her post-X3 future, the whole fic fell into place, and I really loved it.

Title: Infinite Highway
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] kareswen
Rating: R
Pairing: Scott/Rogue (post X3)
Summary: Rogue has seen a lot of things on her travels, but it is still a surprise to meet Scott Summers, who has been presumed dead for some years.

A giant thank you to [livejournal.com profile] storydivagirl for a last minute beta – any remaining mistakes are all mine!

This year, I wrote in two fandoms for the first time: Malory Towers and Young Avengers.
Malory Towers broke my brain for a while, as I tried to work out an angle for the story, but once I'd decided to write gen/femslash (read as you please, just like the actual books), everything flowed easily. [livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina should be awarded some kind of medal for her calming influence during the Time of Panic. Also, there's a Chalet School cameo, as requested. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] kannaophelia, canon-savvy beta reader extraordinaire!

Young Avengers was a pinch hit, as I felt comfortable enough with the universe and characters to leap into it, even though I had to re-read parts of Civil War, and Mark Millar made me cross. I'm posting the two fics in my LJ because I'm trying to keep everything in one place.

Title: A Voice for Cinderella
Fandom: Malory Towers
Characters: Mary-Lou, Mavis, cameo by Jo Maynard (Bettany)
Rating: G
Notes: This story is set during "In the Fifth at Malory Towers"

[livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina and I have been in a bit of a creative slump, writing-wise, though we did make some great art-quilts, and planned a project for 2007. To get the writing mojo working in time for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, we had a drabble-a-thon over the last few days. We selected 20 words from an old encyclopedia (via the 10th-word-on-the-page technique), and 20 characters we find interesting and both know. Then we pulled out the D&D dice and randomly assigned ourselves a word and a character each, then got to work, ten times over. It's an ex-drabble-ganza!

Spoilers only where indicated - most of the drabbles are not issue/episode/novel specific. All rated G, all gen, all 100 words except for two that just wouldn't be cut down that far.

Early: Lisa Cuddy (House) )
Long: Mundungus Fletcher (Harry Potter) )

Mathematics: Inara Serra (Firefly) )
Great: Minerva McGonagall (Harry Potter) )

Emperor: Barbara Gordon (DC) )
Habit: Mickey Smith (Doctor Who, spoilers for first three episodes of Ninth Doctor only) )

Relative: Iron Man (Marvel) )
Publish: Psylocke (X-Men) )

Order: Emma Frost (X-Men) )
Soon: Hiro Nakamura (Heroes: Spoilers up to Episode 9) )

Now that [livejournal.com profile] hp_lovebirds, a Harry Potter femslash exchange, has posted its masterlist, I can reveal that I wrote this fic, Sanctuary, as a pinch hit. I'm reposting here in my quest to have all my fic in one place. Also in my quest for more Malory Towers-style Hogwarts stories, with girls crushing on each other. Since Millicent Bulstrode is in this fic, the crushing may yet become literal.

Title: Sanctuary
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil
Recipient's name: [livejournal.com profile] inell
Characters/Pairings: Hermione/Millicent, Hermione & Ginny friendship, Trio friendship
Rating: PG (mild violence)
Summary: Millicent is paying a lot of attention to Hermione – of the bad kind.
Notes: Set in Fifth Year. Pinch hit for hp_lovebirds.

It's fun to be someone else for a while: in the recent HP ficathon, [livejournal.com profile] reversathon, I became Magenta Mucklerooney ([livejournal.com profile] magentam), the Anti-Dementor.

The request that I received was:
Request: A gen story that shows Snape learning to respect Neville. Setting - post-HBP or post-war. The respect issue can be as major or unimportant as you like to the story as a whole. I just want to see Snape acknowledging Neville's worth, damnit! I don't think things look
very rosy for Snape after HBP, so I don't want him having it easy (perhaps he's living as something of a pariah, for example), but you don't have to have him under threat of execution or anything. I'm thinking drama rather than darkfic. Random prompts (which you can ignore if you like): sunshine, Slughorn, transfiguration.

Oddly enough, I'd never written either of these characters, even though they're two of my favourites. So thank you, [livejournal.com profile] lyras, for a great request. I'm reposting now in my own journal for archival purposes: it's gen, featuring Neville and Snape, post-war.

Neville's Ark )

On the flip side, the delightful and talented [livejournal.com profile] krabapple, who had already written an awesomely cool HP/Doctor Who (Ten) crossover, wrote Remus & Greyback fic for me. It's the best kind of dark: philosophical, intelligent and ruthless. Poor Remus. It's titled Velocity of Motion and a wonderful exploration of both the wolf within, and the wolves at the door.

[livejournal.com profile] comica_obscura has now revealed its authors, and I can out myself as the author of Saltwater, in the Global Frequency fandom. I've never before written in this format, but it was great fun for this particular fic. If you've read Global Frequency, enjoy!

If not, Global Frequency is an international organisation that deals with situations that governments cannot. It is run by the mysterious Miranda Zero. The 1001 agents on the Global Frequency, and all the information required to keep the organisation in touch, are managed by a young computer genius named Aleph. She was the requested character for this story.

[livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink and other intelligent people are discussing the implications of a self-declared crackfic MPREG crossover fanfic being longlisted for the James Tiptree Awards. Of course, the link I followed was to this.

[livejournal.com profile] nihilistic_kid is running the following:

The James TipMe Flash Fan Fiction Good Taste Memorial Award is looking for your submissions. Post an original piece of fanfiction in the comments that

a) is 250 words or less

b) features a dude from a novel and one from a TV show

c) with one guy making the other pregnant (or trying to)

d) remains unfinished

Here's my entry, featuring Doctor Who (I pictured the fourth, but it's up to you), Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. It contains all of a,b,c and d above, though no actual mention of genitalia, and thus should not be read by anyone sane. This fic also explains why I don't read fics where the Doctor sleeps with his human companions.

The remixes are revealed. I was assigned [livejournal.com profile] mofic, which was a big challenge because she writes multiple novel-length movieverse fics, all in one long series. It centres around a rather tumultuous Scott/Logan relationship, but travels from the ethics of adoption to PTSD to international espionage to the challenges of mentoring troubled students. Her canvas is enormous, and it was very difficult to snip out a section small enough to remix.

In the end, I chose this chapter from Canadian Nights, called The Demon Lover because it was a very intense chapter and something of a turning point in Scott and Logan's trust issues. Even so, I had to leave out the last few paragraphs that tied into the bigger plot. The remix was an easy choice, because Logan's thoughts are so impenetrable to Scott at this point in time, and Scott is carefully assessing him by his actions. I wanted to swing the POV around to show Logan unable to think coherently, and yet hanging on to someone that all his senses tell him he can trust, hence "Scents and Sensuality" remix. It's here. And now I can friend her without spoiling the remix! Yay!

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] scoured for an lucid and understanding beta. Your help shaped this pile of words into something coherent of which I could feel proud.

In other news, today is the first anniversary of having access to broadband. [livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina and I had it connected on the first day it was available, and despite it being far from what citizens of other nations call fast, it has been a lifeline from the Land of Cows (at about 14.4-30.2 kbps) to the Land of Geeks. We can download music. Buy books. Make icons. See other people's icons before the entire page of text has been read. See animations. Watch trailers. It's bloody great.
