Labor have won with a crushing majority in the Lower House. Kevin Rudd (aka Kevvy, aka KRudd) will be the Prime Minister! Yay! Even better, Julia Gillard will be our first female Deputy Prime Minister, just a KRuddy heartbeat from the top. (She scares me a little because she looks quite like my high-powered corporate aunt, who looks like Jodie Foster.* Gillard has red hair, though.)

My own electorate has stayed Liberal - no surprises there - despite a solid 5% swing. The next electorate over, which was my electorate in 2001 until shifting populations moved my town along one, has finally swung to Labor! Hooray! This is especially good, as Labor has promised to put money into the wretched and decrepit Princes Highway from Geelong to Winchelsea, which is a bloody good start.

In even more thrilling news, it looks like JOHN HOWARD WILL PROBABLY LOSE HIS SEAT! OMG! OMG! It was a huge swing against him, but they're hoping to hang on with postal votes. I'm not sure if this is an actual possibility or just desperation, but I'm going to do a little NO MORE HOWARD dance anyway!

Awesome Greens leader Bob Brown has retained his Senate seat, and it looks hopeful that Victoria might finally get a Greens senator, too. YES! As I write, Richard Di Natale has been confirmed as the Greens Senator for Victoria. Now I'm going to do a little YAY GREENS dance. South Australia has one too! NSW doesn't, and I would be very surprised if Queensland did, but at least they don't have a Family First senator who isn't even up for election this time. *cries in Victorian shame*

So cheers to all the Aussies out there, and to everyone who opposes Howard, the whining little crony of Bush. Let's hope that the US elections can follow this lead and get rid of the conservatives who are doing so much harm.

*The aunt who looks like Jodie Foster is an aunt by marriage, not a blood relation. I bear about as much resemblance to Jodie Foster as a turnip does.
