Opening the Supernatural Season One DVD set was a great disappointment - the Australian edition has no extras, despite saying on the packet and the DVD itself that it did.

***Spoilers for "Devil's Trap" (season 1)***

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina and I watched "Devil's Trap" again, and I have some questions about how effective the standard protections are against the Yellow Eyed Demon, and how many minions/children it has, exactly. YED claims that holy water and salt are don't matter to something as powerful as it is, but the in-show evidence doesn't necessarily indicate that this is true.

The demon in Meg (YED's "daughter") is exorcised, and by its reactions during the process, being in Hell is horrible and hard to escape - it's hard to believe that she would immediately get out and go back to assisting the YED, if she was so dreading being exorcised from Meg's body.

At the Sunrise Apartments, there are two demons available to possess people. One is YED's "son", who is later shot with the Colt. Who is the other? Is it the YED? If so, the YED is not in John's body at the time the holy water is thrown on it by Sam and the claim to be immune to holy water is not proven. In fact, both of these demons react rather badly to being sprayed with holy water by Sam and Dean the firemen. The second demon could be another minion or child, but there is no evidence to say whether or not this is true, and the YED hasn't mentioned any allies other than its two children, and we haven't seen more than two demons active at once.

As for salt, the demons who get locked in the cupboard in the apartments seem to be trapped by it - they can abandon the humans and leave the cupboard by going through the floor, ceiling or back of the wardrobe, but they can't come out the door and cross the line. Additionally, when the YED is driven out of John's body, it doesn't leave via the windows or doors, which are salted. It slides through the floorboards.

The only evidence that the YED is immune to regular protections comes from its own words - there's no definitive moment where it is definitely resists holy water or salt. The question remains - how powerful is the Yellow Eyed Demon? Is it all hubris and bluster? Does Sam have nothing to fear?
