I've been listening to a lot of music in the later stages of Nano, though I don't usually listen to music when I write. Maybe I needed the impetus of the beat, or even the minor distraction of the lyrics to prevent the major distractions of reading my LJ, playing games, poking the cats and all the other things more fun than writing. As I've been listening, I've suddenly found that I have a Song. Yes, that kind of Song. One True Song that sums up *everything* about a certain pairing, and makes me all moony. (My icon uses a song title, but it's not a song I associate with that pairing!)

To fill in a little background, I don't tend to be very interested in fanmixes, except as a source of cool music. It really shows, to me, the personal investment of the fanmixer in the source text, rather than saying anything about the character. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing, of course, because, like a fanmix and a fanmixer, I can see that this position says a lot more about my relationship to music than it does about why people make fanmixes! Songs attaching to characters is a very personal thing, and does not always translate well; not to mention the huge and sometimes hilarious disconnect between music that the fan likes and music that the character would like!

That said, I invite your pointing and mocking(or your stunned disbelief, [livejournal.com profile] st_aurafina) when I reveal that I now have One True Song for a pairing that I don't even write, featuring two characters I haven't even written yet. A pairing that I read because the fic is so good, but that actually makes me very sad and a little uncomfortable. That pairing is Dean/Sam from Supernatural, and the song is The Desperate Kingdom of Love by PJ Harvey, in a lovely acoustic version. It's a beautiful song with powerful lyrics, which I completely adore or ignore according to whether they fit the pairing. (Honestly, it is a great song, so please enjoy it if you can now dissociate it from my sticky fannish fingers!)

Holy water cannot help you now
Your mysterious eyes cannot help you
Selling your reason will not bring you through
The desperate kingdom of love

There's another who looks from behind your eyes
I learn from you how to hide
From the desperate kingdom of love

At the end of this burning world
You'll stand proud, face upheld
And I'll follow you, into Heaven or Hell

I hope not to commit songfic, but I promise nothing. So, how about the rest of you? Do you have that One True Song that you hide away because it's too uncool, or because only half the song is actually relevant in any way? What song latched on to your fandom/characters/pairings and wouldn't let go? I need to know I'm not alone!
