Well, that was tremendously better. I think I feel some tentative trust returning.

Mary was great - she was so competent and tough, without being showy. And all she wanted to do was protect John - though I suspect that his kind treatment of a spaced-out, shaky young man at the start of the episode means that he's not as innocent as Mary would like to think. Skinner Samuel was great (then absolutely terrifying) and no-nonsense Deanna was terrific. It was very interesting to see a (semi-)functional hunter family in action with their dinner table and their fruit salad and their gun cleaning.

And the cycle of abuse goes on - Mary saves John, John saves Dean, Dean saves Sam, Sam deals with Ruby. Maybe it's the hunter lifestyle - constant exposure to the unnatural and mythical - that makes them unable to accept the death of their loved ones. They cannot just stop and grieve, not when they can call on those same forces to put their world back together, no matter the cost. And that look on Mary's face when Dean showed up, so defiant and guilty, was pure Dean.

The YED's plan is again up and running, which is fascinating. No wonder Ash couldn't trace the psychic kids with the information Sam and Dean gave him: very few of the parents will have burned up, if it's the interruption that is key. And this means that the "rescue" of the baby at the end of Season One may not have been such a rescue after all. Good stuff! More please!

(I hope the next episode is an all-Sam episode, but LJ tells me that Jared had to reshoot movie scenes, hence his absence. Still. More Sam, pls.)
