People! I know you're all very excited about new canon, but I keep seeing people getting enthused about making Christine Chapel a doctor (or counsellor). Why, you'd think that nursing was a shameful job made entirely of girly servitude! If you want to give Chapel a *different* job, go for it, but there's been a hell of a lot of changes in the nursing profession (and the respect given to it) since the 60s, let alone the nursing profession as Gene Roddenberry imagined it. Nurses are not failed doctors or saintly bedside angels, they are a separate medical profession. There is nothing inferior about being a nurse and I'm quite shocked to see a bunch of smart feminists falling for the propaganda.
(Background: my mother has been a nurse, a university lecturer in nursing and now serves on the Nursing Board. My first exposure to politics was marching with her for better conditions for nurses, in the nursing strikes of the 1980s. I'm not, myself, a nurse - for one thing, I'm not hardcore enough!)
