After the massive fic-writing drought of last year (I wrote one drabble between February and November) I decided to write fanfic for Nano. It seems to have opened the floodgates again, as I wrote my Yuletide fics with no problems, and now happily wrote 2 fics and 3 ficlets for
fandom_stocking! Hooray for Nano!
gehayi wanted Firefly fic about Book, and also wanted to hear fairytales or myths from non-European cultures. This made me think about Australians in the Firefly universe, and where the Kooris (in this case, the Kurnai people) might be. Book has always been an interesting character to me, someone caught between personal kindness and a powerful system, so the two stories combined for me through the story of Tiddalik. The Tiddalik story is well-known all over Australia, but it originated with the Kurnai people of Gippsland. I'm not Koori, but I am from Gippsland, and we often heard this story both from Kurnai storytellers and in school books. One of the Kurnai versions ends in quite a different way to the one we usually read, hear or sing, and I've used that version here.

My second fic is probably the most unlikely crossover I've ever written - The Good Wife/Scott Pilgrim. Yes, an awesome American legal drama vs a dorky Canadian video game comic. Still, the awesome of Kalinda can hold many strange things together, just like superglue.

I also wrote three ficlets, including my first one for Vampire Diaries. I was astonished to find there was no Pearl/Katherine pairing tag on AO3 - it seems like an obvious pairing to me! Amazingly, I also wrote a Claremont-era X-Men character that I'd never written before...there can't be many of those left! I'd never written Catwoman or Black Canary before, either, but when I saw that pairing in
senmut's stocking, they just started chatting away to each other, hence it's a very chatty little ficlet.
