I saw this meme posted by [personal profile] amadi and [personal profile] torachan, among others, and the national differences are really fascinating, so I thought I'd post too.

1. What kind of soap is in your bathtub right now?
No-one calls it a bathtub, just a bath. There's a lavender bubblebath because without it the water smells too much like chlorine.

2. Do you have any watermelon in your refrigerator?
No, it's winter. Often do in summer, though.

3. Is there anything moldy in your refrigerator?
No! I'm not saying it's super clean, but our shopping planning is usually pretty good and leaves us with very little left over by the end of the week, which is today.

5. What happened to #4?
404.

6. What would you change about your living room?
The carpet that our late, developmentally disabled cat Ajax peed on will eventually have to go. It's only one corner behind the TV, but on very hot days you can smell it.

7. Are the dishes in your dishwasher clean or dirty?
Dirty.

8. Do you have a can of mushrooms in your pantry?
No, [personal profile] st_aurafina ate it with rice and peas. I don't like canned mushrooms, personally.

9. White or wheat/brown bread?
Whole-grain, rye, sourdough...but not that nasty thin-sliced brown bread from a packet that my mum made us eat. You can't spread anything on it and it has no taste. That was probably the point.

10. What is on top of your refrigerator?
The container for taking the green waste out to the green bin.

11. What color is your sofa?
A weird faux-Aztec design in reddish brown, with some gold, dark blue and dark green patterns.

12. What color or design is on your shower curtain?
We have a glass door, not a curtain.

13. How many plants are in your home?
Just one pot of cat grass for the cats to nibble. It's really green outside, so I don't really feel the need for indoor plants and I'd be too worried about the cats eating them or knocking them over.

14. How many candles are in your home?
A few in the cupboard in case of blackouts.

15. Is your bed made right now?
Yes, though it's often not.

16. If you have a coffee pot, what color is it?
Not sure what this means by "coffee pot". One of those weird dripolator machines? We have a coffee plunger (more classily known as a French press) and a few assorted espresso makers.

17. Electric or standard can opener?
I've never seen an electric one! We have a regular one and a fancy Tupperware one that's supposed to be easy to use but isn't really.

18. Comet or Soft Scrub?
We don't have these brands. Comets are cool, though.

19. Is your closet organized?
Sort of? More than it was a month ago, definitely.

20. What color is the flashlight that you use the most?
Silver. It's a really bright LED one with batteries, but I also have a few clockwork ones with little radios, all tuned into 774 AM (bushfire emergency station).

21. What kinds of things are in your junk drawer?
We used to have one but it got taken out for the dishwasher to be installed.

22. Do you drink out of glass or plastic most of the time at home?
Big plastic Tupperware bottles. They have a really wide mouth and unless I concentrate, I end up tipping half of it down my front.

23.Do you have iced tea made in a pitcher right now?
No, though cold genmaicha was pretty good in summer in Japan. It's much nicer than hot genmaicha!

24. If you have a garage, is it cluttered?
It's pretty good right now.

25. Curtains or blinds?
Curtains. We got new ones last year (the old ones were about 40 years old and crumbling away) and the guy who installed them was really cranky that we had cats who were just going to ruin the curtains. I said I'd rather have cats.

26. How many pillows do you sleep with?
One. It's a very comfy V-pillow.

27. Do you sleep with any lights on at night?
No, I sleep better in absolute darkness, so I'm not looking forward to daylight savings next month.

28. How many ceiling fans are in your home?
None. We have a few pedestal fans, but ceiling fans often set off my vertigo.

29. How often do you vacuum?
Weekly unless something awful happens, usually involving one of us being clumsy or cats being very, very bad.

30. What color is your toothbrush?
Pink and white. It has a replaceable head, so I've had the toothbrush handle for nearly a decade now! Value!

31. Do you have a welcome mat on your front porch?
Yes, this is a muddy town about half the year!

32. What is in your oven right now?
A giant cast-iron pot of pasta sauce. We're going to turn it into lasagne tomorrow.

33. Is your microwave clean or dirty?
It's not filthy, but it's getting old and doesn't ever quite look clean these days.

34. Is there anything under your bed?
An ancient trundle-bed and a whole lot of scrapbooking papers stored flat.

35. Chore you hate doing the most?
Cleaning the catfood bowls. Fortunately, [personal profile] st_aurafina usually does this and I take out the cat litter.

36. What retro items are in your home?
The wallpaper! It's very, very, very 70s.

37. Do you have a separate room that you use as an office?
No, it's not a very big house.

38. If you have a yard, who mows it?
Arthur the melancholy lawn-mowing guy. His twin daughters work for us at the pharmacy, and they are not melancholy in the least.

39. Is there anything on your kitchen floor right now?
Just lovely, lovely lino. When we moved in, it had carpet. Why on earth would you have carpet in the kitchen?

40. How many mirrors are in your home?
Just one, I think.

41. Do you have any hidden emergency money around your home?
Yes.

42. What color are your walls?
Apart from the weird 70s floral wallpaper, there's pale green, pale yellow, fawn and cream.

43. Which rooms in your house have wallpaper?
All the bedrooms and the hall. Every room has different wallpaper, too, matching the paint.

44. Do you have a peephole in your front door?
No, it has thick, distorting amber glass through which I can only see vague shapes. There's also a screen door, though.

45. Do you keep any kind of protection weapons in your home?
No, and that's a really weird and scary thought. Still, if the zombies show up, we're surrounded by well-armed farmers and lots of juicy, distracting cow brains.

46. What does your home smell like right now?
The pasta sauce in the oven, plus the extremely strong homegrown parsley we're going to put in it at the end.

47. Favorite candle scent?
Artificial scents are a migraine trigger.

48. What kind of pickles (if any) are in your refrigerator right now?
None. Is this a common thing to keep in the fridge?

49.Who are in the pictures you display?
Assorted family members, but even more assorted cats!

50. What color is your favorite bible?
Well, there's something I've never thought about! I think we have one somewhere with the reference books, and if we still have it, it's a kind of russet colour.

51. Do you have plenty of cabinet space in your kitchen?
Enough, since we did the last big clean-out and took it all to the Op Shop!

52. Ever been on your roof?
No, but when I was growing up my dad used to let us climb on the roof for fun. You could get up there from a big gum tree, but he'd let us use the ladder.

53. Do you own a stereo?
Yes, which we use to plug in the ipod.

54. How many TVs do you have?
One...plus four computers and two ipads.

55. How many house phones?
Two, on the same line. I have to say we use the mobile phones much more, though.

56. Do you have a housekeeper?
Is that a live-in person? No. We do have a cleaner come in once a week for an hour, and she does the big jobs like the bathroom, toilet, benches and floors.

57. What style do you decorate in?
Nerd. Our walls are covered in either books or posters about superpowers or posters of cats.

58. Do you like solid colors in furniture or prints?
No, it shows dirt and wear more. We used to have a really cool bright red couch but it faded terribly and even a tiny, faint stain showed up very clearly.

59. Is there a smoke detector in your home?
Yes, it's illegal not to have them. Change the clock, change your batteries!

60. In case of fire, what are the items you would grab if you only could make one quick trip?
I wouldn't grab anything (people and cats are not "things"). I'd be out the door as fast as humanly possible. Many people die every year making "one quick trip". Why yes, I've had a major fire phobia since my grandparents barely escaped the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983.

61. Do you know how to work your electrical box?
Yes, It's a straightforward, well-labelled magnetic fuse box, which is good because the power goes out here fairly frequently. We used to have one of those old-fashioned ones with ceramic fuses that you had to wind wire through, which was fun but impractical.

62. What temperature in your home is most comfortable to you?
Between 15-17 degrees C, though poor chilly [personal profile] st_aurafina has her own little heater for winter. Everyone in my family runs hot and my thyroid problems have greatly damaged my ability to deal with heat, so in summer [personal profile] st_aurafina has to put ice packs on me while I lie on the couch trying not to faint. (I probably wouldn't deal well with extreme cold, either, but I'm not going to encounter that here!)

Carpet in kitchens was HUGE in the US in the 90s and I cannot figure out why, for the life of me. EW. (Also, carpet in bathrooms, which I sadly have and am angling to get replaced especially given recent toilet explosions.)

I was shocked the first time I saw carpet in a bathroom. Who thinks that's a good idea and why!?

I've never carpet in a kitchen, though.

My fridge has an alarming number of pickles in it, none of them mine.

I think they may be breeding.

Couple months ago one of the smoke detectors was triggered by a heater being up too high, and dad goes "huh, I woulda thought the batteries would be dead by now".
